Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a selection of some of our most frequently asked questions. We have spilt them up into three categories Sheds, Fencing and Decking.
SHEDS
Q 1. What is the difference between a Rustic and a Delux Shed?
Ans. The difference is in the type of timber used. The Rustic shed is constructed with rough 10mm overlap boards with a 16mm butt jointed roof and floor. The Delux shed is constructed with 22mm kiln dried planed weather sheeting with tongued and grooved roof and floor. Due to the nature of the timber the Rustic Shed is more prone to dampness in wet or very exposed conditions.
Q 2. What do I need to prepare for the delivery of my Garden Shed?
Ans. You need a clear level site and unless the shed is erected on a patio or tarmac some 4" solid concrete blocks. The number of blocks depends on the size of the shed.
Q 3. How long does delivery take after point of order?
Ans. The average time is a week to ten days. We will contact you the day before delivery with an approximate time of arrival. It is possible to pre book delivery for a specific day. We do not deliver on a Sunday or on Bank Holidays.
Q 4. How often do I need to paint my shed with preservative and which one should I use?
Ans. Your shed is treated before it leaves the factory. We suggest that you treat the shed again within six months of purchase and every two years thereafter. Ronseal Fencelife is the brand that we recommend but you will find many good proprietary brands in your local hardware store.
Q 5. What is Pressure Treated Timber?
Ans. Pressure Treated Timber has been C. C. O. treated. This treatment is absorbed into the timber and is very long lasting. The treatment means that minimal further maintenance is required. The timber is a light colour and develops a hint of green with age.
Q 6. Can I get a shed made to my specification?
Ans. Yes. We require a drawing of your requirements and a 50% deposit.
Q 7. Are your sheds under any guarantee?
Ans. Yes. The materials and workmanship are guaranteed for one year.
Q 8. Do you have any alternative roofing other then heavy duty green mineral felt?
Ans. Yes. Brown galvanized box profile roofing. Price depends on size of shed.
Q 9. I have no side access to my back garden. Does this mean that I cannot get a shed?
Ans. If we are informed in advance of the access problems, in most cases, we can make the shed in smaller sections which will go through a house assuming there is a straight run through the house. This will incur a surcharge as the shed is more complex to manufacture and it takes longer to construct.
Q 10. Do sheds come in different colours?
Ans. Yes. Pressure Treated Sheds are a very pale green colour. The standard shed colour is brown. Forest Green is also available but incurs a surcharge as these sheds are hand painted. Please contact a sales representive for pricing information.
Q 11. How do I pay for my shed?
Ans. Sheds are paid for on delivery. We accept most standard forms of payment. If you are not available to meet our delivery staff , a premarked site and prepayment will be sufficient to ensure delivery and erection.
Fencing
Q 1. Does fencing need treatment?
Ans. Unless the fencing panel is pressure treated we recommend you treat your panel every two years with Ronseal Fencelife.
Q 2. What sizes do the panels come in?
Ans. All panel sizes are metric so when a panel is described as 6' x 6' it is actually 1.8m x 1.8m. All panels are 1.8m in width and .6m, 1.0m, 1.2m, 1.5m and 1.8m in height. Panels can be made to specific sizes should a customer so require.
Q 3. Can you just supply the panels and posts?
Ans. Yes. Once you know your requirements just contact our office and we will be happy to deliver the goods you require. Payment must be made in advance and there will be a delivery charge.
Q 4. I live in a windy exposed area and my panels keep blowing down. Can you recommend a suitable panel?
Ans. A panel that offers less resistance to the wind is best in these conditions. Cottage panels or Hit & Miss panels are good options as they allow the wind through while providing privacy.
Q 5. Do you supply and fit fencing?
Ans. Yes. We will supply and fit fencing. We can provide an approximate costing over the phoneand we can arrange for our representative will call and discuss your requirements. Lead time is generally about two weeks. Erection of fencing is only available within the Greater Dublin area.
Decking
Q 1. What timber is used in Abwood Decking?
Ans. Pressure treated softwood is the standard timber that we use in our decking. We also offer the alternative of ribbed or smooth decking timber.
Q 2. How do I estimate the amount of timber required to make my deck?
Ans. The decking timbers are 95mm wide which means that for every meter in width you
will need approx. 10 decking timbers. Alternatively it is three decking timbers to every foot width.
Joists or supporting timbers underneath form the framework and they should be placed at 400mm intervals to support the floor.
Example: 3.6m x 3.6m deck laid over existing patio or concrete area
Framework: 4 no. 3.6mts 150mm x 35mm or 100mm x 35mm (depending on height off ground)
Floor joists: 9 no. 3.6mts 150mm x 35mm or 100mm x 35mm
Decking Timbers: 38 no. 3.6mts 95mm x 35mm
4 boxes 4mm x 60mm Screws
If you are laying the deck on grass you will need to sink posts into the ground to act as a base.
Q 3. Why has the timber in my deck cracked?
Ans. Timber is a natural product which reacts to changes in temperature and climate. As it ages hairline cracks may develop in the timber. This is a feature of pressure treated timber and in no way affects the life span or strength of the timber.
Q 4. Can I paint the deck a different colour?
Ans. Yes. There are various proprietary brands that are suitable. These can be used to change or enhance the colour and protect the timber against the elements.
